TikTok Offers The Community Authority to Limit AI-Generated Media in Timelines

Users will soon have a new feature that permits them to reduce the amount of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the platform revealed that it presently contains more than 1 thousand million AI videos.

Testing and Rollout

This change is undergoing trials over the following weeks before a global release. This shift comes amid a surge in AI content, spurred by emerging AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that almost 10% of the most rapidly expanding channels on a competing service primarily display clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this material is classified as mass-produced AI material, a phrase for poor-quality, mass-produced content that is typically illogical or dreamlike.

Our research shows that a lot of users like content created using AI tools, including AI artwork to science explainers, and we aim to offer the community the option to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own choices,” stated a platform representative.

AI on the Platform

The platform shared that there are now over a billion videos on its service tagged as artificially created. Overall, over 100 mn media items are submitted to the service each day, making AI content a minor portion of its overall inventory.

User Control Features

Users will be capable of decrease or raise the amount of artificial media they see by opening the content preference option in the application and choosing the AI content topic. Further subjects that can already be adjusted under the filter encompass politics, clothing, beauty, and dance.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s policies mandate creators to label “realistic” AI-made content, and it bans dangerous fake videos of well-known individuals or crisis events. Any believable AI-generated clip that is unmarked can be deleted under its community policies.

Additionally, the platform will henceforth add an AI-generated watermark to content produced via its built-in AI features, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing artificial media. This action is intended to help prevent users from trying to evade the labeling process.

AI Literacy Programs

The company is also introducing a $2 million AI literacy fund for professionals and institutions to create educational content about using AI responsibly. This project will benefit non-profit groups focused on educating coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

The video-sharing app has defended its moderation strategy, amid discussion over plans to cut jobs for hundreds of safety staff in the United Kingdom. It is expected to cut 439 jobs in its content moderation division in London, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists raising concerns that people are being substituted by AI moderation.

A company official explained that people-led review would continue to be important, but AI can protect employees by filtering out the most harmful content prior to it gets reviewed by humans. The platform reported a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content handled by human moderators over the past year due to the use of its automated systems.

We believe it is crucial to combine staff and AI to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s very important to limit contact with unsafe media as quickly as possible, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is proving valuable operate efficiently.”
