Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
