Everyone is Encouraged to Be the Fourth Haim Member.

"When are you chatting with Haim?" a message arrives. "My request was to ask if I can be their extra sister."

However, there remains a key snag: I also desires to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're far from alone. Several famous admirers have publicly petitioned for the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the greatest groups, they're a tight-knit trio. Their music videos frequently show them marching in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such boundless happiness you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a guitar'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the ultimate honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate young girls to make music."

"Therefore anyone are welcome to be the honorary member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The group have called into their homes, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in the running for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the nomination resonates with the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant achievement," adds Alana. "But we're just grateful for the female artists that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The album was born from a period of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The words detail departures and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them determining in real life who they aspire to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to actively work on shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That developed toughness called for a different sonic direction – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The band's openness inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.

One man ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Legacy

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an worldwide audience.

Yet Haim will forever be their number one priority.

"We have been playing music since I was four," concludes Alana. "There is no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
